The Susan Weston Care for All Campaign is an effort to raise $700,000 that will expand Agrace’s ability to provide hospice services to patients who have no means to pay for this care. The dollars raised through this initiative will fund routine home care, as well as residential care and acute-level inpatient hospice services provided at the Agrace campus in Madison.

The campaign was recently renamed to honor Susan Weston, a dear friend of and advocate for Agrace who died unexpectedly in October 2012. Susan and her husband, Carl, a retired Agrace medical director, believed strongly that excellent end-of-life care should be available to everyone in our community, including those who cannot afford this quality care.

The funds raised with this campaign will enable Agrace to provide hospice services to some of our community’s most vulnerable patients, including young adults with no insurance, seniors without caregivers, people who are homeless and those with mental illnesses. People like Beth and Andy.

The Susan Weston Care for All Campaign will enable Agrace to provide general hospice care for approximately 50 patients every year. That’s twice the number of charity-care patients we served in 2011. The funds will also make it possible to provide residential hospice care at The Ellen & Peter Johnson Residence to patients who cannot afford the room-and-board costs (which, unlike the cost of hospice care, are a private-pay cost for most patients). This expansion of Agrace’s care will move us closer to our vision of “care for all.”

Special Alert: IRA Charitable Rollover Extended
Earlier this week, the House and the Senate passed a one year extension of the IRA charitable rollover. This provision, which had expired at the end of 2013, will now be effective retroactive to January 1, 2014, but only until the end of this year. The final day to take advantage of the IRA Charitable Rollover is December 31, 2014. This simple method of charitable giving lets you make direct gifts from an individual retirement account (IRA) to a qualified charity—without increasing your taxable income.

Here’s how it works: If you are over age 70 ½, you can directly transfer money from your IRA to a qualified charity, such as Agrace HospiceCare, without generating more income or paying any additional tax. Your tax-free gift can be any amount you choose; up to the $100,000 annual limit (a couple with separate IRAs can each give up to $100,000). Another important benefit: Your gift will qualify toward your required minimum distribution.

There is a time limit to this provision, and also several key details to keep in mind: • The gift must be from a traditional IRA (not other types of pension plans). • The gift must be given to a qualifying public charity, such as Agrace HospiceCare, and go directly to the charity: Instruct your IRA trustee or custodian to distribute the funds directly to Agrace HospiceCare or the organization of your choice. (Agrace HospiceCare has form letters of instruction if you need them).

You must act by December 31, 2014 to take advantage of this provision for 2014. A planned gift may enable you to satisfy personal financial goals in addition to providing Agrace HospiceCare with important, long-term support. Donors are often surprised at how planned giving options can increase the impact of their gift. Yet while tailoring a gift to fit your financial, estate and tax plans, you can also gain maximum tax rewards, maintain financial security and make a truly meaningful contribution.

As you consider the following planned giving options, think about not only how much you would like to give, but also what you want to accomplish with your gift. The answers may help you determine the giving option that is best suited to your needs and wishes.

Donors are advised to consult their legal/financial counsel before planning their gifts. Such counsel can help the donor make the largest possible gift to Agrace at the least possible net expense. Personal financial circumstances vary considerably and must be carefully considered in order to receive maximum benefits from existing tax laws.

A beautiful gift

On June 1, 1994, Agrace HospiceCare patient Doris “Dori” Klubertanz died—and left a beautiful legacy. When she was living, Doris surrounded herself with teddy bears. She believed strongly in their power to bring warmth, love and a smile to folks of all ages. Because Doris found such comfort in her bears, she wanted to share her experience with other hospice patients and their families. So she left a gift to Agrace HospiceCare to establish the Dori Bear Program.

We welcome donations from individuals, families, service organizations, faith communities, businesses and others. New teddy bears larger than 10 inches tall are needed year-round. For health and safety reasons, all donated bears must be new with tags still attached.
